ABOUT THE RESCUE

"It's just a fish."

I get that a lot. But fish are more than just a decoration. They are thinking, feeling creatures with individual personalities. If an animal is sentient enough to be able to be taught to jump through a hoop above water like bettas can, then there is no doubt that they deserve a great home that they can thrive in and be loved and cared for, just like any other pet.

So why is it that every time I walk into my local big-box pet stores,  I find bettas who are either dead or struggling to survive?

Their tiny cups are almost always freezing cold and constantly filled with poisonous ammonia from their own pee, poop, and rotting food pellets.

Many fish are also often flushed down their owner's toilets or dumped into nearby rivers or lakes when they become sick or difficult to care for. However, dumping a fish into the toilet and flushing it makes for a very slow and painful death, as does being dumped.

That is why I am creating Nutmeg Betta Rescue. It is a brand new rescue and it is very small, but it will make quite the difference for as many fish as I can house and have the funds to medicate. I take in fish from big-box pet stores at either a no-profit price or a donation so as to not support the abuse that they support. I also house fish from people who are no longer able to care for their pets.

The more fish tanks, medicines, water treatments, or fish food that I am able to purchase, the more fish I am able to help. Since there are no adoption fees, the rescue is run entirely on donations. Profits from all sales made from this website will also go right back into this rescue.
